Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging outlines a vision for supporting America’s growing population of older adults
In May of this year, the Department of Health and Human Services’ newly formed Interagency Coordinating Committee on Healthy Aging and Age-Friendly Communities released a strategic framework for a national plan on aging. The framework identifies four key areas for focus, each designed to empower older adults to live healthy, independent lives:
1. Age-Friendly Communities:
Imagine your neighborhood transformed into a haven for all ages! This pillar focuses on creating walkable, accessible communities that foster social connections and engagement for older adults.
2. Coordinated Housing and Supportive Services:
Finding safe, affordable housing with access to necessary services can be a challenge. This pillar aims to streamline the process, ensuring older adults have a comfortable and supportive living environment.
3. Increased Access to Long-Term Services and Supports:
As needs change, access to care becomes crucial. This pillar emphasizes providing a continuum of care options, from in-home assistance to long-term care facilities, ensuring older adults receive the support they deserve.
4. Aligned Health Care & Supportive Services:
Navigating healthcare can be frustrating. This pillar emphasizes integrating healthcare with other supportive services, creating a seamless and coordinated approach to well-being.
The Strategic Framework for a National Plan on Aging sets a roadmap for supporting America’s growing population of older adults. It highlights the importance of fostering age-friendly communities, collaboration across various sectors, and upholding core values of person-centeredness, inclusion, respect, and collaboration. This report serves as a vital resource for policymakers, community organizations, and individuals invested in creating a future where people of all ages can thrive.
