Social Isolation and Health Challenges Among Aging LGBTQ+ Adults
As LGBTQ+ adults age, many face unique challenges, including concerns about social isolation, access to health care, and caregiving responsibilities. According to a recent AARP survey, 78% of LGBTQ+ adults over 45 worry about having enough social support as they get older. This concern is particularly acute among women, Black respondents, and those with disabilities.
The survey highlights how LGBTQ+ older adults often serve as caregivers, sometimes for nonrelatives, leading to increased stress and challenges. Despite improvements in health care access, particularly for gay and lesbian individuals, transgender and nonbinary adults still face significant health disparities. These groups are more likely to feel isolated and encounter issues with the quality of care they receive.
The report also underscores the importance of building strong social connections within the LGBTQ+ community to combat loneliness and improve overall well-being. As societal acceptance grows, it’s crucial to ensure that all LGBTQ+ older adults receive the support and care they need.
This AARP report sheds light on the ongoing struggles of aging LGBTQ+ individuals and emphasizes the need for continued advocacy and support to address these critical issues. For more insights, visit the full AARP report.
