Providence Launches Age-Friendly Action Plan to Address Needs of Older Adults

Providence has introduced a forward-thinking Age-Friendly Action Plan, led by Mayor Brett Smiley, aimed at building a more connected and supportive city for residents of all ages. With nearly 25% of Rhode Island’s population expected to be 65 or older by 2030, the action plan reflects a proactive approach to community planning, ensuring that Providence is positioned to meet the evolving needs of all its residents.

The plan outlines strategies to address critical areas such as affordable housing, transportation, and social inclusion. These efforts aim to make Providence a place where older adults can thrive, stay engaged in community life, and access the resources they need to live independently and with dignity. Key components of the plan include:

  1. Expanding housing options that meet the needs of older adults, with a focus on affordability and accessibility.
  2. Improving transportation systems to ensure older adults can move safely and easily around the city, with targeted outreach on public transit options.
  3. Promoting social engagement and community participation through initiatives that foster intergenerational connections and reduce social isolation.

This Age-Friendly Action Plan marks an important milestone in Providence’s commitment to creating a more inclusive, supportive city for residents of all ages. It sets a standard for other municipalities looking to plan for similar demographic shifts and provides a roadmap for fostering healthy aging.
