Senator Jack Reed and AARP Team Up to Help Older Adults Spot and Stop Scams

Fraud remains a serious issue, with older adults increasingly becoming prime targets. Last year alone, over 100,000 older adults across the U.S. fell victim to fraud, resulting in more than $3.4 billion in losses. In Rhode Island, older adults reported losing a staggering $7.4 million to scams. The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it even harder for older adults to identify scams. Criminals are now using AI to mimic the voices of loved ones, tricking them into thinking a family member or friend is in urgent need of financial help. This alarming trend has caught the attention of lawmakers and law enforcement, prompting them to take action.

In response, U.S. Senator Jack Reed is joining forces with AARP Rhode Island and the Rhode Island State Police Financial Crimes Unit to help older adults protect themselves. On Thursday, October 10, at 11:00 a.m., Senator Reed will host a special event at the East Providence Senior Center focused on scam prevention for older adults. The discussion will provide them with the tools they need to recognize and avoid falling prey to fraud. Read more here…
