Honoring a Lifelong Advocate: Herb Weiss’s Archive at RIC Captures 45 Years of Aging-Focused Journalism
Herb Weiss, one of Rhode Island’s most respected voices on aging and healthcare, has reached a remarkable milestone: his 45 years of advocacy and writing have been officially archived at the James P. Adams Library at Rhode Island College. The Herbert P. Weiss Papers, 1980 to 2025 collection features more than 1,100 articles and three books, documenting a career dedicated to shedding light on issues facing older adults and their families.
Weiss’s work spans decades and platforms—from early roles at the Providence Journal to contributions to the Pawtucket Times, Senior Digest, and RINewsToday. His writing helped shape public understanding and policy conversations about aging, long-term care, and health equity. With academic credentials that include a Master of Arts in Studies in Aging and a Specialist Certificate in Aging from the University of North Texas, Weiss brought both rigor and heart to his storytelling.
His archive represents more than a personal achievement—it’s a public resource.
“Herb’s collection will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers interested in aging, healthcare policy, and journalism,” said Dr. Marianne Raimondo, Dean of the School of Business at Rhode Island College.
James Connell, Executive Director of Age-Friendly Rhode Island, added, “Herb’s voice has been instrumental in elevating the conversation about aging in Rhode Island. His work not only informed, it empowered.”
By ensuring that Weiss’s extensive body of work is available to future generations, Rhode Island College honors a career rooted in service, storytelling, and advocacy. The archive stands as a lasting legacy—and a powerful reminder of how journalism can drive awareness and change.
