How Americans’ Views on Growing Older Are Changing

Aging in America is being redefined. According to a recent Harris Poll, older adults are living longer, healthier, and more active lives than ever before. As the population of those aged 65 and older continues to grow, perceptions of aging are shifting from decline to opportunity.

Key findings show that many Americans now see aging as a time of growth and reinvention. A majority (82%) of respondents identified positive aspects of aging, including gaining wisdom and having more time for hobbies and family. Additionally, the idea of retirement is being reimagined, with older adults opting for “flex-retirement,” balancing work and leisure, rather than fully stepping away from their careers.

This shift is being fueled by advances in healthcare and longevity, with many older adults expecting to remain active well into their later years. The demographic changes we are witnessing will require shifts in how society supports and engages this growing population, but they also present exciting opportunities for both older individuals and the communities they live in.
