Society’s Age Bias Is Stealing Your Independence

Newport-based Certified Senior Advisor Helen Hames addresses a critical issue facing older adults: how ageism undermines independence and limits potential in later life. Drawing from Jane Fonda’s concept of life’s “Third Act,” Hames argues that aging should be viewed as a time of growth and wisdom rather than decline. However, deeply ingrained ageist messages in our culture create fear around aging, particularly affecting women who are bombarded with anti-aging messaging from an early age.

 

Hames presents compelling data showing that over half of young women are stressed about aging while still in their 20s and 30s, and more than 80% of older adults experience internalized ageism that negatively impacts their health and independence. In Rhode Island, these effects are evident across all walks of life, from older adults refusing mobility aids out of shame to individuals isolating themselves rather than seeking help. According to Age-Friendly Rhode Island’s Executive Director James Connell, addressing these unconscious social beliefs is crucial for creating a culture where healthy aging becomes a priority for all generations.
