Rhode Island Goes Big on Local Parks and Rec Upgrades
The State of Rhode Island is dedicating significant funding to enhance local recreation amenities across municipalities. Governor McKee and the Department of Environmental Management recently allocated $2 million in matching grants to 11 cities and towns. These funds will allow communities to construct new facilities like playgrounds, pickleball courts, dog parks, splash pads, and trails, as well as revamp existing assets like athletic fields, basketball courts, and performance venues. Since launching this grant program in 1988, Rhode Island has invested over $91 million into nearly 600 recreation projects statewide using voter-approved green bond financing.
Developing inclusive recreation environments accessible to all ages is crucial for promoting engaged, intergenerational communities. The funded projects will provide opportunities for outdoor activity, social interaction, and environmental appreciation benefiting residents young and old. Thoughtful design elements like accessible playground surfaces, shaded areas for relaxation, walking loops for all mobility levels, and multi-use spaces for events and performances help create vibrant public spaces that resonate with diverse resident interests and needs. By prioritizing age-friendly recreation investments, Rhode Island is taking strides to foster community connectedness, healthy lifestyles, and an enhanced quality of life for citizens through every phase of life.
