Join us to spread awareness of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)

On June 15th, we join the world in celebrating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This day isn’t just about highlighting a problem, it’s about empowering older Rhode Islanders and ensuring their safety.

Data from the DOJ tells us that abuse is a hidden issue, with estimates suggesting only 1 in 24 cases involving older adults are reported nationally. Social isolation can be a risk factor, but strong social connections are a powerful defense. Here in Rhode Island, we have fantastic resources to support older adults and empower them to report abuse:

  • The Office of Healthy Aging Adult Protective Services Unit: This dedicated unit investigates reports of abuse, neglect, or self-neglect of Rhode Islanders 60 and older. Report suspected abuse directly at 401-462-0555.
  • The Attorney General’s Patient Abuse and Neglect Unit: If you suspect abuse in a nursing home or assisted living facility, this unit can be a valuable resource. Contact them at 401-574-4400.
  • RI Elder Info Hotline: Need information or just want to talk? This confidential hotline provides support and connects you with the right resources. Call 1-800-642-3377.

Older adults strengthen our communities. Let’s work together to ensure their well-being and safety.
